Meet the BOARD

President
Camilla Sutherland
My love for tennis began at Roeding Park where I played my first tournament at the age of twelve. I continued to play at Roeding Park during college where I played on the Women’s tennis teams at Fresno City College and Fresno State. As a teacher, I brought my students from Our Lady of Victory School for tennis practice to Roeding Park when we had the covered bleachers. I look forward to work with the membership to continue to build the community love for tennis at Roeding Park as the President of Roeding Park Tennis Club. “I don’t like to lose-at anything. Yet I have learned most not from victories, but setbacks. If winning is God’s reward, then losing is how he teaches me.”

"Do you know what my favorite part of the game is? The opportunity to play." – Martina Navratilova
That's what the RPTC represents for me - the opportunity for accessible, high-quality tennis for Fresno and the surrounding community.

In middle school I was introduced to tennis and made friends with a girl whose father played at Roeding. I began playing there and then I made the Fresno High Tennis Team and all of our home matches were played at Roeding Park on the original courts by Olive. I stopped playing during college, came back briefly in my 20s, but the demands of my career took me away from tennis. Years later in my 40’s I rediscovered tennis and have been playing regularly since 2003.
I’ve played on many USTA teams, traveled Northern California playing USTA tournaments, been to the World Team Tennis recreational team nationals, was an officer in the Clovis Tennis Club and served several years as our USTA Local League Coordinator. It was playing at Roeding Park’s courts that made the Pandemic bearable and that solidified my love for our courts.

I have been a part of the Roeding Park tennis scene since 1969, serving first as the tournament director and then as the president. My husband, Jack, and our children spent many weekends at the park as we met new players who became close friends.
In the mid 1970’s three tennis friends and I saw a need to coordinate local tennis tournaments, so we formed the Central California Tennis Associations,(CCTA). Our organization helped clubs from Bakersfield to Los Banos set up a circuit of tournaments for local players of different levels, culminating with the Me-n-Ed’s Tournament of Champions. I served as the president for ten years and am thankful to those who have continued its legacy to this day.
Currently, I play in USTA leagues and have competed in national age group tournaments for the past 17 years.
I am pleased to be serving on the RPTC Board and look forward to creating a variety of tournaments for our membership.

Three generations of my family have enjoyed playing tennis at Roeding Park. I was first brought to the Roeding Park tennis courts as a toddler and remember hanging out with the children of other tennis players. Tennis runs deep in my veins and Roeding Park holds a special place in my heart.
